THE GREAT SCHLOSS KALTENBERG CALENDAR 2020

ALBRECHT IV. (1447-1508) DUKE OF BAYERN-MÜNCHEN, ALBRECHT THE WISE

Albrecht IV, the 3rd son of Albrecht III and his wife Anna of Brunswick-Gubenhagen, was initially not intended for the government, but for the intellectual state, and was thus able to devote himself exclusively to education at a young age. In 1463, after the death of his oldest brother Johann, he joined the double government. He was the first comprehensively educated humanist on the Bavarian duchy throne. After the disputes with his co-ruling brothers Sigmund and Christoph and the Landshut War of Succession caused him to enact the Bavarian Primogeniture Ordinance in 1506, which first came into effect with his grandson Albrecht V. This marked the end of the age of divided Bavaria. He was married to the Emperor’s daughter Archduchess Kunigunde of Austria, sister of Emperor Maximilian I, with whom he had nine children.

The calendar depicts the life of Albrecht IV in impressive images and honours his work in arts, culture, politics and science as well as his merit to the enactment of the Bavarian Primogeniture Ordinance.
