THE GREAT SCHLOSS KALTENBERG CALENDAR 2019

OTTHEINRICH (1502-1559) – COUNT PALATINE AND PRINCE-ELECTOR

Count Palatine and Prince-Elector Ottheinrich of Pfalz-Neuburg, a son from the marriage of Count Palatine Ruprecht with Elisabeth of Bavaria-Landshut was the most colourful Renaissance prince of the 16th century from the House of Wittelsbach. After the death of his grandfather Duke Georg the Rich of Bavaria-Landshut it came to the Landshut War of Succession, which Emperor Maximilian I put an end to the Cologne ruling of 1505. For Ottheinrich and his younger brother Philipp, the Principality of the New Palatinate was created with Neuburg as a residence.

The calendar depicts the life of Ottheinrich in impressive images and honours his work in art and culture, his passion for architecture and desire to travel, as well as his interests in astrology, medicine and alchemy.

To this day, the crest of the town of Neuburg on the Danube greets every new arrival from the top of the Red Gate. Following the end of the War of the Succession of Landshut by the arbitration of Emperor Maximilian I (1459–1519) on 30th July 1505, the new independent territory of the Young Palatinate was created for Ottheinrich and Philipp, the grandsons of Duke Georg the Rich of Bavaria-Landshut. The child princes were added to the crest of their new town of residence, surely to the great joy of their subjects. Outside the town gate are Ottheinrich and Philipp as boys riding on hobby horses, trying to grab the paws and tail of the golden lion lying on top of the gate. Both the lion and the rows of Bavarian diamonds under the main cornice of the gate originate in the crest of Wittelsbach.
